Shrinkage your sales
Follow a good retail diet: Where we have spoken before about the need to follow a good diet (in store) at least, around your processes to maintain great availability for customers. It’s boring. But it means that you must do the right thing and scan your gaps, day in, day out, in order to stay […]
Why Aldi win at the front end
& Lidl to some extent. Whenever one visits a discount store, typically, I’m amazed at how hard working the colleagues are, they get through some work and their target times (often seen on the doors of warehouses) show that the time colleagues have to work pallets is rarely longer than 20 minutes. But there’s always […]
Don’t neglect your stores (online edition)
The emergence of online shopping, digital and technological development meant that the stores were finished (or so I heard). Yet stores are now more important than ever. They carry the brand of the retailer in their hands. Neglecting physical stores means an automatic degradation in experience for online customers, they’re faced with substitutions due to […]
Retail by Email sample – Mere
This is an example of a note on the new Mere discount store in Preston from our retail by email service which offers weekly notes, imagery and observation from the UK retail market, sent directly to your email account. Keep ahead of the competition with our unique retail perspectives, thoughts and retail expertise. Get retail […]
An insight sample – Boots
Boots is a business that has branches everywhere and the smaller stores don’t appear to have any less range than the larger ones in some categories. Opportunity knocks. A mass of product on dated shelves and an in store look that is also near historic. Their reason for being is also a question – would […]
Our retail image of the day – Tuesday 15th June
Our retail image of the day features Superdrug and their focus on sustainability. There’s a lot to like about Superdrug and their appeal to the young audience that they’ve built up. Part of this challenge comes with the wider signage and comms to the customers, being aware that the millennials and younger are looking for […]
Our retail image of the day – Truth – Thursday 10th June
The challenge with living in a post-truth world is that lying, or bending the truth has become an art form, where people know that half truths and lies are being told, but it occurs so often that people are either desensitised to it being bad, or can find something to explain it away. There are […]
Our retail image of the day – Wednesday 9th June
Today for our retail image of the day, we look at some elements of COVID19 that we’ll never see scenes in our lifetime (one hopes) of what we saw last March. As COVID19 came to our shores, with retail stood up and delivered. Whenever there’s a crisis, or a problem, retail finds a way. COVID19 […]
Tales of woe – John Lewis
Our subscribers recently had the privilege(*) of a two parter email that uncovered our particular tales of woe based on a recent store visit to John Lewis. Whilst we can’t make all of that content available here; I have cut down the emails to highlight the key parts. (*) sort of It’s just frustrating. A […]
Our retail image of the day – Monday 7th June
For today’s retail image of the day, we have Target and their Back to School event. The Minneapolis based outfit is one of our favourite retailers, of all time. It’s hard to say which specific elements we like as there are so many, but their tone of voice, signage, brand and look/feel is always just so […]
Our retail image of the day – Friday 4th June
Today we focus on Topshop for our retail image of the day. It’s a sad image of mannequins in the window of a closed down store. It’s also a sad tale for retail with the larger Arcadia group falling in to administration in the COVID pandemic and thus being seen off by COVID, non-essential retail […]
Our retail image of the day – Thursday 3rd June
Today we feature Superdrug on our retail image of the day, with their relatively modern store on a retail park in Yorkshire. Being halfway to 40, the Instagram generation is somewhat beyond my comprehension. Although it’s more of a time principle – IE you can only really look to master 1, maybe 2, platforms before […]
Our retail image of the day – Wednesday 2nd June
Boots has stores everywhere, from larger stores to the smaller pharmacies. Some of which are tiny and barely house a range worth mentioning – Boots is ubiquitous with the high street at large. Despite that, their scale, size and ownership. They continue to flatter to deceive and appear to be losing ground in a major […]
Our retail image of the day – Tuesday 1st June
Our retail image of the day today features John Lewis and their store in Leeds, indeed, their baby category specifically but it could be any number of images that I took, when visiting yesterday. A fuller write up will be available for our email subscribers too, featuring more areas of concern than just these. The […]
Our retail image of the day – Friday 28th May
Friday’s image is via Sainsbury’s with their impressive predicting of the future with their food waste reducing in store produced Banana Bread, long before it was made famous by lockdown 1 in March 2020. The addition of the banana bread in Sainsbury’s was introduced long before it was made famous by every man, woman and […]
Our retail image of the day – Thursday 27th May
This image is via Cole Haan and their ‘sold out’ display in the store near the Rockefeller Centre, New York (no less) which ends up raising a very interesting point on scarcity in retail. I know there is a whole different world of people who track window displays, fast fashion, trend spotting and the like within the wider ‘apparel […]
Our retail image of the day – Wednesday 26th May
We have decided to develop an ‘image of the day’ feature to look at the best practice side of retailing. This blog series will operate in a similar vein to our retail advent calendar that was so successful last year. Wednesday’s image is via Booths and their Pancake Day display. This is a strong piece […]
Our retail image of the day – Tuesday 25th May
We have decided to develop an ‘image of the day’ feature to look at the best practice side of retailing. Operating in a similar vein to the retail advent calendar that was successful last year. Tuesday’s image is via B&M Stores. Our image features a basket of shopping which the customer in no way intended […]
Our retail image of the day – Monday 24th May
We have decided to develop an ‘image of the day’ feature to look at the best practice side of retailing, in a similar vein to the retail advent calendar that was reasonably successful last year. Today’s image is via Sainsbury’s and their display work in Toys. We feature their a highlight from their wonderful work across the […]
Debenhams – May they rest in peace
I managed to stumble upon a Debenhams in the Bullring recently that was in the final throes of death, with sparse stock levels, former display kit adorning darkened corners of the store and two floors closed off entirely. It was sad to see, a reminder of the numerous bad decisions that left them facing this […]
Retail’s Best – Advent Calendar
Back in 2020, a year that no one wishes to remember, we produced our ‘retail’s best’ advent calendar, charting 25 of the best store visits that we have undertaken over the years. Of course, COVID has hampered all manner of travel plans and we are left to trawl our existing archive of 300,000 images whilst […]
Store Post – April – Week 2
We produce a weekly newsletter, via email, entitled “Store Post” that covers all manner of industry issues, challenges, thoughts, and the rest from our store visits and wider perspective on the sector, at large. The first newsletter of this year, was produced this week, click here for access. If you wish to have your own […]
A warm welcome (back)
Some of you who have followed here for many, many moons will recall our original blog “UK-Retailers” which focused on many elements on UK retailing, including the much fabled Morrisons Fresh Format stores in Kirkstall, St Albans and beyond. We were fortunate that Morrisons were busy developing stores near our northern base, such as M […]
Whole Foods – What is the wider plan?
As we enjoyed the yearly pilgrimage to Florida for Disney, Universal and a fair bit of retail therapy (visiting for me, spending for everyone else…) I thought it would be good to turn a spotlight on to a number of retailers in the US who are visited as part of the wider trips, Whole Foods […]
Waitrose Unpacked and #plasticfree
When visiting the Reduced Plastic / Waitrose Unpacked store some weeks ago, I was struck by the customer feedback hub and the comments that had been left, visiting more trial stores and concepts than I care to remember frankly. One is always struck by how different any store looks in the early days, each newly […]
Wholesale change for Jack’s?
We have been busily recording a number of podcasts and building a base of support via Apple podcasts, Spotify and Podbean (hosters of said podcast). Our 5th episode goes live on Monday 8th April; covering the new Jack’s store in Rawtenstall. An interesting proposition given the larger size of the store (35k sq. ft) and […]
Job losses at Tesco
I think it’s perhaps indicative of the ‘who can run the least worst shops’ trend that we are seeing in the UK that this news doesn’t get as much ‘shock’ as it would in the past. However it’s still a bad news story and one that Tesco will be trying to control in the coming […]
Jack’s – Part of the Tesco family
So a top 10 from the Jack’s visit yesterday. Lots of press and indeed it’s major news(!) There will be lots of press about price differentials and the like, but the reality is that with 2600 lines and 1700 of those being solely Jack’s – it makes a comparative difficult. Fair play to Tesco for […]
Further thoughts on Jack’s and Tesco
Ref: Jack’s – This is a Twitter thread I wrote this morning. A twitter user ‘unrolled it’ to one piece of writing which is impressive and enabled me to add it here. A great piece of work – Threadreaderapp There will be lots of noise tomorrow re: Jack’s and the Tesco world. Rome wasn’t built in a […]
Jack’s – Exclusively Tesco(?)
A lot will be written this week about the venture by Tesco in to the discount world, by opening Jack’s (we assume the name is such) and therefore moving in to the brave new world of discount retailing. There has been some real high level insight offering little to the debate, irrelevance about whether the […]
Tesco – A look at the past – Part 1
Intriguing that both Andrew Higginson and Terry Leahy were compelled to speak about the past regime of Phillip Clarke in the past week, noting phrases such as ‘corporate vandalism’ as an example. The results speak for themselves, the behaviour from a casual observer on the fringes also speaks for itself. Running a FTSE 100, blue […]
Store closures for Poundworld
It is sad to read that Poundworld are potentially closing up to 100 of their stores as they battle the ‘high street’ slowdown.
The 5 that matter – New York City and Online
With a recent visit to New York under our belt, capturing another 2,000 images charting the latest and greatest added to the vault…. I was thinking about how to reflect on the trip and break the huge number of observations in to manageable chunks. Be it blogs, newsletters or our wider reports.
The 5 that matter – M&S Food
With the rather surprising news that former UK retail veteran Stuart Machin has returned to UK Food retailing after a period in Australia with Coles and Target and also with Steinhoff (UK). Here are the 5 that matter for M&S Food as he looks to get started in April.
Express Checkout – Toys R Us
Express Checkout: Toys R Us (UK) have entered administration today after struggling to pay a VAT demand. The chain has made a loss for the last 7 years (from 8) and has struggled with a mountain of debt and an aged store estate with locations that are broadly out of town.
Express Checkout – Tesco/Booker
Express Checkout: Tesco and Booker have ratified their merger / takeover today, with 85% voting in favour of the deal. Tesco have already started to integrate Booker, with a Chef Central implant store in Cambridge (former Dobbies) and two Extra stores benefitting from an expanded range within the store in seasonal space.
Express Checkout – Christmas 2017
Christmas 2017 The Grocery Insight view Introduction The week that was, a huge week of Christmas results and Grocery Insight will take this opportunity to cover off some of the results, the statements within and try pick out any key themes. The discounters and Asda are not included, but will be in coming updates. […]

A few things we noticed whilst walking around stores last week – No.35
US Special – Week 35. This week was actually two weeks ago, confused? So am I, but read on! A few things we noted whilst walking around stores this week. The US is always a favoured retailing destination and the ability to combine a bit of family time alongside the various stores, there’s always something […]
A few things we noticed whilst walking around stores last week – No.34
Week 34. The week is slightly delayed thanks to the bank holiday and this being written on a different continent. Next week – week 35 is a card carrying, United States retail special. Excited? Good! This week we have Tesco doing their bit for the nation’s mathematicians, some armageddon in retail (US) discounting in review and a […]
A few things we noticed whilst walking around stores last week – No. 33
Week 33. The week saw more terrible weather harming both BBQ and B&Q sales. Featured this week are Christmas 2016 and 2017 alongside shrinkflation, skilled work in Frozen Foods, B&Q garden inspiration and yet more fake news on pricing.
A few things we noticed whilst walking around stores last week.
Week 32. As a youngster, I always enjoyed fantasy football with Baddiel and Skinner and in particular their feature at the start of each show where they highlighted things they’d seen whilst watching football that week. In a pre internet world, it was far harder than it sounded.
First look – new format Aldi in the UK
Quite the exclusive for the Grocery Insight blog and wider email subscribers; with the first look at the new Aldi store format for the UK. The discounter plans to open 70 or so of these refits this year as they seek to step their offer on further, beyond the ‘discount’ model and in to the realms of […]
Poundland – Multi Price retailing
This is an excerpt of the latest Grocery Insight newsletter which covers the UK food retail market extensively, with 2/3 emails per week sent out to subscribers. There is rich insight, numerous images (c.12/13 today) and a real closeness to the market and the activity of the retailers. To subscribe – visit Newsletter subscription for […]
Iceland Clapham – a new dawn
Here is a teaser of the email newsletter that was released this morning on the subject of Iceland, both their market performance and indeed, their lovely new store format in Clapham, London. Subscriptions for our retail by email subscription service are available: It’s emailed directly to you and covers numerous topics within the food retail […]
Sir Ken Morrison – A tribute
I never formally met Sir Ken Morrison, but he was always a bit of a hero of mine. Not only was he from the same city (Bradford), but he was a formidable force in food retailing, my chosen industry. It’s a source of regret that I never managed to meet and have a discussion with […]
Food retail / consumer trends for 2017
With the trends for 2017 out from most of the more professional outfits, it’s time for me to bring my predictions and thoughts to the fore. Of course, there will be no mention of #millennials #tech and #wearables and it’ll be a steely focus on the reality facing people this year.
Market Overview – Christmas 2016
This post originally appeared in the subscription-only Grocery Insight newsletter, and has been republished here in full. Happy new year! I noted with interest that the analysts post Christmas were lauding a great sales performance from the ‘big four’, highlighting that the sales had returned and good times were here again. Of course, this wasn’t fuelled […]
M&S store closures and sub brands disappearing…
Noteworthy that M&S are row(e)ing back from their international ambitions, closing stores (some of which will be anchors in the towns they occupy) and also pushing more into food. A fair ambition, given Steve Rowe’s success in food; he built the chain into a real powerhouse in food. Albeit with a tiny market share but […]
Throwback Thursday 1: The First M Local Store, Ilkley
Throwback Thursday will be a weekly feature trawling the Grocery Insight image archive (now standing at over 60,000 images). First up, from 7th August 2011 – the first M Local store opens in Ilkley. It’s easy to look back at the expansion and subsequent failure of M Local and say it was doomed from the […]
Throwback Thursday 2: Tesco Watford refit
Throwback Thursday! The weekly look at the Grocery Insight archives (we have 60,000 + images), today it’s Tesco Watford Extra and the re-opening of the refitted store back in August 2014. A year later, Philip Clarke was to lose his job and Dave Lewis parachute in to rescue the ailing chain. The 3 stores (Coventry, […]
Brexit. Recession. Food Retail?
This post originally appeared on LinkedIn, and has been republished here in full. So Brexit, who expected that? I think the closeness literally could see it go either way but the margin of victory was surprising, as were some of the areas that ended up voting leave. Notable mention goes to Cornwall who voted leave, […]
Talking Tesco Profits on BBC Radio 5 Live
Listen to Wednesday’s interview where I speak to Adam Parsons on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Wake Up To Money program about Tesco’s yearly results. Originally broadcast Wednesday 13th April 2016.
Tesco launching ‘farm brands’
Back to the future from Tesco? Around the time of the discount emergence and the recession, Tesco launched a number of discount brands (Country barn cornflakes) which were direct imitators of their Aldi equivalents – higher price than Value but lower than core brand. However that added complexity when ironically, the discount business is about […]
The 6 P’s of Discount Retailing
The 6Ps of Discount Retailing was developed by Grocery Insight as a model to analyse the Discount channel. Our presentation explores the Discount blueprint, and how Discount stores adapt to local markets and create advantage through a combination of provenance, pricing, price, place, PR, and raw productivity. Our weekly email covers the latest events in […]
A year in store – 2015 – Sampling programme of the year – Tesco
Firstly, credit to Mark Smith for this spot in his local Tesco, it literally is nearly beyond belief in terms of the sheer number of corporate guidelines it flouts, and that’s before the regulatory ones that the stores are bound by.
A year in store – 2015 – Most challenging store – Fakta
So as we roll ahead to the second element of the alternative ‘year in store’ awards, the ‘most challenging store’ and in the past, it would have been a near certainty for a Tesco store to win this award, such was their descent into oblivion. However we have seen a major improvement in store standards, […]
A year in store – 2015 – Best Produce category – Fotex
So as we leave another year behind, it is time to review the year that was; celebrating the good, bad and indeed the ugly from the shop floor. The stores are the heartbeat of all retail and the cornerstone of the Grocery Insight model – insight derived from stores is incredibly powerful – and such […]
Hero Lines
This post originally appeared on LinkedIn, and has been republished here in full. Hero lines are quite the Christmas tradition in retail, with Morrisons pushing a marvellous looking £12 gateau with enough Chocolate to sink a battleship… As the calendar turns towards the 19th / 20th December – we can get excited at the final […]
Space
This post originally appeared on LinkedIn, and has been republished here in full. Not the galaxy, but in Tesco – who do have a galaxy of their own with the space in stores. A far cry from not so long back, where rumours of an overstock reduction would see warehouses ‘freed up’ to create space […]
Beware Unintended Consequences…
This post originally appeared on LinkedIn, and has been republished here in full. The Government’s laudable bandwagon jump of the minimum wage rise towards a ‘living wage’ was welcomed in by (not least) the ever lovable Iain Duncan Smith. Who was delighted no doubt that he can seemingly reduce his welfare bill further, without the […]
Discount Isn’t a Fight Just for the Retailers
This post originally appeared on LinkedIn, and has been republished here in full. A recent visit to Belgium and Holland yielded some clues about how to combat discount in the UK, but to be honest – their formulaic approach was more evident here than what we experience in the UK. Aldi Nord for example were […]
Throwback Thursday No.5 – 2013 – Tesco Watford
Throwback Thursday (Friday) no.5 (after a brief period off) looks back into the archives from 2013 (August) with the Watford concept. The Tesco vision for the future of hypermarket retailing.
Throwback Thursday No.4 – 2011 – Morrisons Kirkstall
Throwback Thursday (Friday) no.4 looks back into the archives from 2011 (July) with the Kirkstall store of the future changes. This isn’t the first phase, rather other adjustments that had been dropped in further down the line.
Throwback Thursday No.3 – 2013 – Tesco Chelmsford
Following on from Bishop’s Stortford was a weekend trip ‘darn sarf’ to Chelmsford in July 2013, this was the ‘Super Fresh’ trial store from Tesco. Featuring a strong vista and a real focus on Fresh Foods, the store took the learning from Chester and Kensington with ‘Food to go’ and enhanced several elements of their counter […]
Throwback Thursday No.1 – 2011 – M Local
Due to the work pressure, finding time to write a good blog each week is becoming a near impossibility, however there is a need to keep the blog / website updated for the thousands* of visitors who beat a weary path to Groceryinsight.com each working week. The blog in the older days was a regular […]
Tesco Full Year Results – 4 feet to glory
So, a shiny new website equals a shiny new blog too, and thanks to Kurt from the US who came up with ‘4 feet to glory’ as the new blog title. For those not familiar, 4ft is the typical size of a bay in store. The only way to accurately review a store is bay […]

After the relative success of the Retail World Cup 2014 (well done to Caxton Metro and their delayed prize) its time the focus moves onto Halloween. A relatively small event a few years ago has grown to a huge retail event, fuelled […]
Next up – Retail Halloween 2014
Plenty more talking to be done on Tesco, but its time to celebrate major events in the UK retail calendar with Halloween and then Christmas both offering stores opportunity to get creative.

A minor break from the ’66’ for Dave Lewis (there are 3 blogs to come!) as the Netto signage has been revealed via a planning site, and it looks like a definite change from the Netto we were used to. Whilst the logo remains the same, the yellow is likely sharper than the one used […]
